PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team was eliminated from the 2013 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Friday, with a loss in consolations to Tulsa.
Going into doubles play Lauren Mira and Courtney Colton were the sixth-ranked doubles team in the nation and the fifth-seed in the tournament.
After dropping their second round match to a talented Columbia team, the duo was matched up in the consolation round with Enrique and Vickers of Tulsa.
“I thought we competed better today than we did yesterday,” said VU assistant coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “We got off to a bad start and couldn’t pull ahead when we had the chance. You have to credit Tulsa, this was a hard fought match for both teams.”
The Vandy team got off to a slow start, dropping the first three games. Mira and Colton battled back into the match but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early 3-0 hole. Vanderbilt dropped the match 8-6, and was eliminated from the tournament.
The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will now, as a whole, turn their attention as it hosts the June Stewart Invitational from October 11-13. The ‘Dores will welcome Indiana, William and Mary and Georgia Tech to Nashville for the three-day tournament.
