KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team closed out the 2009 fall season by going a perfect 3-0 in doubles at the final day of the St. Mary’s Tournament Classic on Sunday. The sophomore duo of Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu highlighted the day by winning their third match in as many days to win the No. 1 doubles draw.
Preeg and Wu pushed their fall record to a team-best 14-4 with a 9-7 win over East Tennessee State’s team of Yevgeniya Stupak and Kelly Hotzhausen. It marked the second time in the last two weeks that the Vanderbilt duo outlasted the Lady Buccaneer tandem. The Vanderbilt duo edged the ETSU pair in a tiebreaker in the third round of the Ohio Valley Regional two weeks ago.
Senior Catherine Newman and junior Keilly Ulery teamed up in doubles on Sunday to defeat ETSU’s Paula Jaime and Karina Kedzo, 8-6 for their second win of the weekend while VU’s Hannah Blatt and Megan Gornet took down ETSU’s Tara Sheets and Diana Navrostska, winning 8-2.
The `Dores also got singles wins from Newman and Ulery on Sunday while three other Vanderbilt players fell in hard fought matches.
Newman put the finishing touches on what was already a successful weekend with an impressive straight set win (6-1, 6-1) over Wake Forest’s 44th-ranked Sasha Kulikova for her team-high fifth win over a ranked opponent this fall. Ulery needed only two sets to take care of Wake Forest’s Kathryn Talbert as she claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win on Sunday. With the win on Sunday, the junior finishes the fall with an 11-5 record.
Sunday marked the final fall tournament of the season for the Commodores. VU will return to courts on Jan. 15, 2010 when they travel to Evanston, Ill., for the Northwestern Invitational.
