Women’s Hoops Slides Past Colgate 11/26/2005
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Junior forward Carla Thomas scored a game-high 24 points to lead the No. 20/22 Commodore women’s basketball team to a 72-33 win over Colgate in the championship game of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. Thomas made 9-of-12 field goals and was the game’s only player in double-figures. Colgate (1-3) was led by Megan Ballard’s nine points. Vanderbilt (5-1) has won five straight games, and 30 in a row when hosting a regular season tournament at Memorial Gym. Colgate took an early 7-4 lead on a three-pointer by Megan Ballard at 17:38 of the first half. Vanderbilt then went on quite a run, scoring 29 unanswered points over the next 13:39. During the run, seven of CU’s 20 missed field goals were shots blocked by the Commodores. VU also caused nine turnovers as part of the spurt. Junior guard Dee Davis has nine points for Vanderbilt while also contributing five assists and three steals. Sophomore Liz Sherwood added eight points and five of VU’s season-high 10 blocks. Junior Caroline Williams The Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament All-Tournament Team was highlighted by Thomas the weekend’s Most Valuable Player. Thomas averaged 21 points in two games. VU’s Sherwood and Williams, Colgate’s Gretchen Polinski, McNeese State’s Regina Spivey and Charleston Southern’s Rachel Potts were also recognized. Earlier in the day, McNeese State defeated Charleston Southern, 79-71, in the tournament’s consolation game. Vanderbilt returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 30, traveling to Raleigh, N.C., to take on Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina State. The Commodores will next play at home when Northern Arizona visits Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. CT. |
