Women’s Golf at Wilmington 10-28-04

Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team is in Wilmington, N.C. for the Landfall Tradition. The 54-hole event begins Friday with 12 women’s teams and 12 men’s teams getting in a practice round Thursday.

The tournament marks an early end to Vanderbilt’s fall season, a scheduling strategy that Coach Martha Richards Freitag first used successfully a year ago.

“I felt that concluding the fall season a few weeks earlier really helped our team last year,” Freitag recalls.  “We were able to focus on our academics and get into our off-season routine quicker.  I thought we came back in the spring fresher and the results showed we played better golf.

“The fall season goes by fast and furious for us with tournaments, practice and recruiting weekends,” Freitag continues.  “I think it is important for the freshmen in particular to get a chance to fully be a part of the student body.  The off-season gives them the time to participate in activities they might not always have time to do.”

That strategy might be even more important this year with a youthful team of four freshmen and two sophomores.

Vanderbilt has taken Chris Brady, Kristen Svicarovich, Liebelei Lawrence, Helen-Rose Richards and Julie Bartholomew.

“We need to finish in the top half of this tournament,” Freitag says.  “There are some very good teams here but we want to pick up our play.  I’m looking for Kristen, Chris and Liebelei to continue their good play.  We need Julie and Helen to be more consistent to give us the spark we need.”

Brady is currently ranked 30th and Svicarovich 39th in the nation by Golf Week.

The Commodores are paired with Furman and Tennessee Friday, teeing off about 10 a.m. at the Country Club of Landfall.  The course consists of three nine-hole layouts with the women’s teams playing the Pines and Ocean nines.
