Women improve to 3-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt defeated the Austin Peay Lady Govs at home 7-0 as the No. 15 Commodores remained undefeated to start their 2012 spring season.

Ashleigh Antal and Alex Leatu looked as though they were out to avenge their doubles loss against Miami (Ohio), winning today’s doubles 8-2 in just 40 minutes. Nelly Radeva and Megan Gornet finished up 8-1, while Jackie Wu and Lauren Mira completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory over Vanja Tomic and Alison Carre.

“The women played smart tennis today,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “I was really impressed with all of the pairs. Ashleigh and Alex played very well against their opponents in doubles, and Jackie and Lauren really fought it out in their doubles match as well.”

Antal continued her trend of winning her singles sets first, today beating her opponent, Vanessa Tavares, 6-2, 6-1 just four minutes ahead of Radeva’s finish.

Junior Radeva powered through her first singles set 6-0, overmatching her opponent on her way to a 6-0, 6-2 win.

“I think Nelly did a really great job,” said Macdonald. “She is continually improving and she showed that today.”

Wu battled Austin Peay’s Vanja Tomic for a 6-1, 6-2 finish, as she, like her Dores, begin the season undefeated.

“We have a strong team, up and down the line,” said Macdonald. “They showed that today. It was a good team win.”

The Commodores host the Belmont Bruins tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Currey Tennis Center in the last day of a four-match homestand.
