Women dominate day one at Regionals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It was a successful first day for the Commodores as the three women’s tennis players won all of their doubles and singles matches at the Ohio Valley Regionals.

Jackie Wu and Lauren Mira, the fourth seeded pair, won both of their main draw doubles matches on the first day of play, taking the first round 8-0 and defeating Purdue in the second round, 8-3. The two will move on to play Memphis tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT.

“I thought Mira and I played pretty well in doubles,” said Wu. “We took some chances with some plays and they paid off for us. With every match we play together, we get more comfortable as a team. I was happy with my performance in singles and thought I did a good job of setting up the points and taking advantage of my opportunities.”

The two went on to win their afternoon singles matches, with freshman Marie Casares beating her opponent as well. Between the three, Vanderbilt dominated the first round of play.

“I thought we did a great job today,” said assistant coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “We came prepared, focused, and ready to play. Jackie and Lauren looked sharp in both of their doubles matches this morning and along with Marie all three had good solid starts in singles. We will keep our focus on one match at a time and look forward to making another step tomorrow.”

Winners of the Ohio Valley Regionals will get an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York later this fall.
