RIDGELAND, S.C. – Vanderbilt men’s golfer Wells Williams won a pair of matches for the United States at the 29th Arnold Palmer Cup, as he went 2-1-1 over the week at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina.
The upcoming Commodore senior capped his first appearance in the Palmer Cup with a 1-up victory over Utah’s Gabriel Palacios on Saturday afternoon. Williams earned 2.5 points for the United States after going 2-1-1 in the three-day event.
The West Point, Mississippi, native went unbeaten in a pair of foursome matches on Friday. Williams first teamed up with Florida’s Jack Turner to collect a 1-up win over Daniel Bennett of Texas and Florida’s Luke Poulter of the International Team in the morning foursome matches. In Friday afternoon’s mixed foursome, Williams and Isabella McCauley of Minnesota ended in a tie with Arizona State’s Michael Mjaaseth and South Carolina’s Louise Rydqvist.
The Vanderbilt senior opened the Palmer Cup playing in a mixed singles match with Northwestern’s Lauryn Nguyen on Thursday. The duo battled the rain before being handed a 2&1 defeat against Long Beach State’s Charlie Forster and Lauren Kim of Texas.
The International Team won the 29th Arnold Palmer Cup, posting a 35-25 victory over Team USA.
