Weekend Preview: Vanderbilt heads out west to Los Angeles to compete in the Southern California College Baseball Classic.

  • The Commodores will play at UCLA on Friday, at USC (Great Park; Irvine, Calif.) on Saturday and against UConn at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday.
  • All-time, Vandy is 4-3 against UCLA, 3-2 against USC and 4-0 versus UConn.

Last Time Out: The Commodores wrapped up a 6-0 homestand with a weekend sweep over Saint Mary’s and a Tuesday win over Tennessee Tech.

  • Vandy has scored double-digit runs in each of its last four games, totaling 50 runs over that span.
  • The Dores run-ruled their opponents in seven innings in back-to-back games, beating Saint Mary’s 10-0 on Sunday and Tennessee Tech 16-3 on Tuesday.
  • In Tuesday’s win, every Vanderbilt starter reached base at least once and nine different players tallied at least one RBI. The Dores worked 13 walks to go with nine hits.
  • The last time Vanderbilt recorded eight wins in February was 2018 when the Dores went 8-1 in the first month of the season. Vandy went 6-1 in February to begin the 2021 campaign.

Where the Commodores Rank: As a team, Vanderbilt is among the national leaders in runs (33rd), hits (31), walks (9th), triples (6th), doubles (29th) and fielding percentage (23rd).

  • RJ Austin is tied for most hits in the SEC and is 20th in DI with 15. He ranks fifth in the SEC and 28th in DI in runs scored with 13.
  • On the base paths, Austin’s six stolen bases is 3rd in the SEC and 21st nationally. He’s tied for most triples (3) in all of Division I.

Who’s Hot: Three Commodores are hitting over .400 through the first nine games led by RJ Austin at .455.

  • Jacob Humphrey is hitting .440 to start the year and newcomer Riley Nelson boasts a .406 average with a team-high 12 RBI.
  • Freshman Rustan Rigdon leads the team in walks with 10 and is hitting .360 to start his collegiate career.
  • Through his first two starts as a Commodore, newcomer Cody Bowker is 1-0 with 12 strikeouts and just two hits with zero runs allowed over 9.0 innings.
  • Sawyer Hawks has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings over two appearances with 10 strikeouts and two hits allowed.
  • After missing the first couple games due to injuries, newcomers Mike Mancini and Brodie Johnston have contributed over the last four games. Mancini is 4-for-6 at the plate with five runs scored. Johnston has a double, four RBI and four runs scored.
