Welcome Back Dinner Awards

Grayson Garvin, the SEC Pitcher of the Year, and bowling All-American Brittni Hamilton took the top student honors while Tim Corbin, who led his Commodores to their first ever College World Series appearance, was named Vanderbilt’s Coach of the Year at the annual Welcome Back Dinner Wednesday night.

Hamilton and GarvinGarvin was named Vanderbilt’s Male Athlete of the Year and Hamilton was voted the Female Athlete of the Year after a tremendous 2010-11 that included two national individual titles and the team’s NCAA second place finish. Garvin has signed a professional contract with Tampa Bay while Hamilton returns for her senior season. Voting was done by Vanderbilt’s Senior Athletic Managers.

Corbin won the honor for the third time in his career after a season that set school and even Southeastern Conference records and included a title in the NCAA Super Regional.

Others cited in the ceremony included the women’s golf team with the Tolbert Cup for having the best combined athletic, academic and community service achievements. The Provost’s Award for the team with the highest combined grade point average was women’s cross country.

The Vice Chancellor’s Award for outstanding year-round performance was presented to the compliance staff, headed by Candice Lee and the Special Appreciation Award, sometimes called the Unsung Hero Award, was given go assistant ticket manager Michael West.

In addition, Vanderbilt’s four Top 10 NCAA Tournament teams and its six other NCAA qualifiers from last year were recognized.
