Commodores dominate Memphis to complete weekend sweep of in-state opposition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 15 Vanderbilt returned home for a 6-1 victory over in-state foe Memphis on Sunday afternoon at Currey Tennis Center to push its perfect start to 3-0.

The Commodores’ No. 2 tandem of Anna Ross and Holly Staff cruised to a 6-1 victory to open the day. Dasha Kourkina and Anessa Lee then used a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point for the Dores at No. 3. Looking for the sweep, the No. 1 pair of Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca fell in a close tiebreak 7-6 (4).

In singles action, five of the six Commodores took victories to clinch the win over the Tigers with multiple Dores seemingly racing each other to the finish line. Lee took a 6-0, 6-4 win against Camila Soares at No. 5, which was quickly followed by Ross winning a 6-3, 6-4 decision againstAran Teixido Garcia at No. 2. Rosca battled through a gritty second set to win 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 and Staff triumphed 6-2, 7-6 (4) at No. 3 secure the win for Vanderbilt.

To round out the day, Marcella Cruz made quick work of her opponent by beating Monique Woog at No. 6 handedly 6-1, 6-1.

Vanderbilt will next continue its homestand on Saturday at 11 a.m. when it hosts Miami (Fla.).
