Weekend Preview

Vanderbilt hosts Loyola Marymount for three-game series

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt takes a four-game win streak into the weekend as Loyola Marymount visits Hawkins Field for a three-game series.

SERIES PREVIEW: All three games will air on SEC Network+. Friday’s game will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday and a 1 p.m. start Sunday.

  • This weekend will be the first meetings between the two sides. LMU is Vanderbilt’s second opponent from Los Angeles this season after the Dores hosted UCLA Feb. 24-26.

LAST TIME OUT: Vanderbilt has won four games in a row and six of seven entering the weekend.

  • Vandy bounced back from a 5-3 loss to Nebraska last Friday at the Cambria College Classic with a walk-off win over No. 18 Maryland on Saturday and a combined no-hitter against Minnesota on Sunday.
  • The Commodores took both midweek contests, beating Tennessee Tech 12-1 on Tuesday before winning a 17-inning affair with Evansville 2-1 on Wednesday.
  • The Dores have two walk-offs in their last four games. RJ Schreck hit a sac fly in the bottom of the ninth to lift Vandy past Maryland, 8-7 on Saturday. Schreck scored the winning run Wednesday night vs. Evansville on a Parker Noland single.

A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN: Enrique Bradfield Jr. stole his 97th career base vs. UCLA (Feb. 26) to break the program record set by Charles DeFrance (1980-82).

  • Bradfield is the only active player in NCAA baseball (I, II and III) with 100 career stolen bases.
  • The junior outfielder’s 101 career stolen bases ranks seventh in SEC history. Tennessee’s Mike Basse (1989-91) holds the all-time record of 145. Florida’s Mike Duva is sixth at 103.
  • Bradfield stole 46 or more bases in each of his first two seasons. He was 46-for-46 in 2022 after going 47-53 as a freshman in 2021.

AT THE PLATE: A look at some of Vanderbilt’s top offensive
performers.

  • Senior Parker Noland hit the walk-off RBI single to end Wednesday’s 17-inning game vs. Evansville. He has reached base in nine consecutive games and has a six-game hit streak.
  • Graduate RJ Schreck is hitting .478 (11-for-23) over the last six games. He has three homers, three doubles, a triple, seven RBIs and nine runs scored over that span.
  • Sophomore Jonathan Vastine is batting .353 (6-for-17) with runners in scoring position.
  • Freshmen RJ Austin and Chris Maldonado have made immediate impacts in the lineup. Austin has a team-high eight multi-hit games through his first 14 collegiate appearances. Maldonado has four doubles and three RBIs in the last three games.

ON THE MOUND: Vanderbilt recorded its fourth no-hitter since 2019 on Sunday at Minnesota.

  • The Commodores have at least one no-hitter in each of the last four full seasons.
  • Greysen Carter, Sam Hliboki, Ryan Ginther and Nick Maldonado combined for the no-no. Hliboki went 3.2 innings with eight strikeouts and earned the win.
  • Vandy last threw a four-pitcher combined no-hitter in 2003 vs. Western Kentucky in head coach Tim Corbin’s first season. That no-hitter was also a perfect game.
  • Six Commodores combined for 24 strikeouts Wednesday vs. Evansville in a 2-1, 17-inning win, breaking the program record for single-game strikeouts.
