Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt won its midweek matchup against Lipscomb before dropping the three-game weekend series to top-ranked Tennessee. Vanderbilt used an impressive performance on the mound from freshman Devin Futrell to defeat the Bisons 7-1 on Tuesday at First Horizon Park. Futrell (5-0) threw Vanderbilt’s first nine-inning complete game of the season, and the program’s first since Kumar Rocker went the distance against Mississippi State on April 23, 2021. The lefty held Lipscomb to one run on two hits. He recorded six strikeouts with just two walks. Dominic Keegan’s three RBI led the offense. Calvin Hewett went 1-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Vanderbilt fell 6-2 to Tennessee in Game 1 of the series on Friday. Tennessee used a four-run fifth inning to chase Vanderbilt starter Chris McElvain (4-1), as the junior right-hander suffered his first loss on the season. McElvain totaled eight strikeouts and allowed five hits over 4.2 innings. The Volunteers won 5-2 on Saturday and 5-0 on Sunday. Patrick Reilly worked 5.0 solid innings for the Dores in the series finale. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out four.
