Commodore Notes

Vanderbilt went 2-2 on the week including a series win at Tennessee over the weekend. The Commodore dropped a nail-biter in Game 1 against the Volunteers on Friday before winning the next two games to take the series.

The week started with a trip to Louisville for the 13th Battle of the Barrel. Vandy came up just short, dropping the one-run game 5-4. Austin Nye went 5.0 innings in the start and held the Cardinals to two runs. Brodie Johnston hit his 10th home run on the season to tie the game in the sixth before Louisville retook the lead.

Vandy and Tennessee battled in all three games with Tennessee winning 3-2 in Game 1. Johnston homered for the second consecutive game, becoming the first Vanderbilt freshman since Pat DeMarco to reach the 11-home run mark. JD Thompson held Tennessee to two runs over 6.0 innings with six strikeouts.

Vandy’s offense came alive in Game 2 on Saturday, posting 10 runs on 10 hits. Vandy scored in five different innings including a four-spot in the sixth to take control of the contest. The Dores stole eight bases in the game and five pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts with Luke Guth earning his first win on the season. RJ Austin and Braden Holcomb paced the offense with three RBI apiece and Riley Nelson went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, RBI and two runs scored.

The rubber match on Sunday lived up to its billing. Vandy and Tennessee traded punches with the Volunteers scoring in every inning that Vandy scored through the first six frames. Colin Barczi launched two home runs with the second preceding a two-hour weather delay. After the delay, Jonathan Vastine homered to go back-to-back with two hours in between homers. Ethan McElvain recorded the save, striking out the final batter on three pitches with the bases loaded.

Vanderbilt wraps up the regular season at Hawkins Field with a three-game set against Kentucky beginning Thursday. Vandy will recognize its seniors before each game this week.
