Commodore Notes

Vanderbilt went 3-1 on the week including a series win over Alabama at Hawkins Field. The Commodores started off the week with a 5-2 win over Indiana State on Tuesday. The Dores then run-ruled Alabama 12-2 in eight innings on Friday. The Crimson Tide evened the series on Saturday but Vanderbilt hit a walk-off homer in the finale on Sunday to win 9-7 and take the series.

Sunday’s thriller saw Braden Holcomb hit a triple, a solo home run and the game-winning two-run homer in the ninth. The Dores trailed the Crimson Tide 7-2 in the eighth inning before scoring three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to win it.

Brodie Johnston was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. The freshman hit .438 (7-for-16) in Vandy’s four games with three doubles, five RBI and three runs scored. He hit the game-tying, two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth of Sunday’s win. He then scored the winning run on Braden Holcomb’s walk-off homer.

The Commodores travel to Louisville for the Battle of the Barrel on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT on ACC Network. Vandy enters the week ranked No. 11 in the D1Baseball poll while Louisville sits at No. 20. After Tuesday’s rivalry game the Commodores head east to Knoxville for three more rivalry games against No. 15 Tennessee beginning Friday.
