Commodore Notes
The Commodores went 2-2 on the week, earning an 11-1 win in eight innings Tuesday against Xavier and a 6-0 shutout against No. 4 Texas on Saturday.
Jacob Faulkner made the start for Vandy on Tuesday and went a season-high 4.1 innings, holding the Musketeers to just one run on three hits.
Tommy Goodin went 3-for-4 with five RBI. Braden Holcomb went 4-for-5 and scored three times and Brodie Johnston also scored three times. Rustan Rigdon went 2-for-3 with the game-ending RBI and added a pair of walks.
Texas grabbed the first game of the series Friday, but Vanderbilt responded Saturday and handed the Longhorns their first shutout of the season as the Dores evened the series with a 6-0 win. Freshman Aiden Stillman made his second collegiate start Saturday and struck out six Longhorns over 3.2 innings. Junior Luke Guth took on the next 2.1 innings and held the Longhorns to just one hit with four punchouts. Another true freshman, Tyler Baird, earned his fifth save with three scoreless frames to close out the win.
The three arms combined to strike out 14 Longhorns while holding the visiting side to five hits. Braden Holcomb finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Mike Mancini also scored twice and went 2-for-4 at the plate. As a team, the Commodores totaled 11 hits.
Vanderbilt and Texas battled for 10 innings in the finale Sunday but the Longhorns took series with a 4-3 win. After Texas took a one-run lead in the eighth, Rustan Rigdon ripped the game-tying double in the ninth as Cade Sears came all the way around from first to score. Wyatt Nadeau turned in a strong outing on the bump with 6.0 strong innings. Nadeau gave up two runs and issued just one walk.
For the week, Holcomb led the team in hitting with a 9-for-16 (.563) four-game stretch. He drove in five runs and had three extra-base hits. Tommy Goodin also drove in five runs on three extra-base hits. Jacob Faulkner totaled 7.0 innings in three appearances, striking out five and allowing just one run on three hits.
Next up for the Commodores is a Tuesday contest against Middle Tennessee at Hawkins Field. Vandy then heads to No. 24 Alabama for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
