Commodore Notes
The Commodores went 3-1 on the week, beating Lipscomb 15-1 on Tuesday before taking two of three at Kentucky over the weekend.
Tuesday at Lipscomb, Vanderbilt put runs on the board in each of the first seven innings and in eight of the nine innings and recorded a season-high 19 hits. Logan Johnstone went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Rustan Rigdon drove in three runs on two hits and Korbin Reynolds knocked in a pair as well. Ryker Waite went 3-for-5 and Brodie Johnston reached base five times and scored four times.
The Dores dropped a heartbreaker Friday in Lexington as Kentucky hit a walk-off grand slam in the ninth to take the series opener. Connor Fennell went 6.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three.
Vandy responded with an 8-7 win on Saturday and won the series Sunday with a 13-6 victory.
On Saturday the Commodores scored seven runs in the second inning and added an insurance run in the ninth to hold off the Wildcats. Kentucky had the tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth before Brennan Seiber got a groundout to end the game, earning his first save of the season.
With the series on the line Sunday, the Commodores trailed early but a go-ahead grand slam by Will Hampton in the sixth inning and a six-run ninth inning secured the victory on the road.
Hampton, who made his first collegiate start on Sunday, reached base in all four plate appearances and his grand slam was also his first career home run. He finished 2-for-2 on the day with four RBI.
Aiden Stillman picked up the win, his second of the season, and Tyler Baird held Kentucky scoreless over the final 1.2 innings for earn his fourth save.
Vanderbilt is back at Hawkins Field this week for four games beginning Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Xavier. The fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns come to town for a three-game series beginning Friday.
