Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt went 4-0 on the week with a sweep over No. 5 Georgia at Hawkins Field.
After a thrilling, extra-inning, walk-off win over Lipscomb on Tuesday, JD Thompson set the tone for the weekend in Game 1 vs. Georgia on Thursday. Thompson shutdown one of the nation’s top offenses with 8.0 innings of work, allowing just one run on five hits. Thompson registered a career-high 14 strikeouts.
Vandy trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh with Brodie Johnston hit a no-doubt, game-tying home run to fuel Vandy’s comeback. An RBI single by Colin Barczi gave Vandy the lead and Johnston scored an insurance run in the eighth as the Commodores won the first game 3-2.
Offense was the story in Game 2 as Vandy out-slugged Georgia with a 13-7 win. Johnston clubbed a pair of three-run homers and finished the game with seven RBI. Braden Holcomb and Barczi also hit homers in the win.
Connor Fennell turned in yet another strong outing in Game 3 on Saturday as Vandy completed the sweep with a 5-2 win. Fennell earned his fourth win on the season after going 5.2 innings. The righty held Georgia to two runs on three hits and registered a career-high 11 strikeouts. Riley Nelson gave Vandy the lead with a two-run blast in the fifth inning.
Vanderbilt jumps to No. 9 in this week’s D1Baseball poll after coming in at No. 19 last week. The Commodores are now fifth in the SEC standings and are 22-3 at Hawkins Field. Vandy heads to No. 23 Ole Miss for three games this weekend after hosting MTSU on Tuesday evening.
