Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt opened its 2022 campaign with a three-game home series against seventh-ranked Oklahoma State. The Commodores fell in the final two games of the series after a dominating performance from the pitching staff in a 3-0 shutout win in Game 1 on Friday night at Hawkins Field. Junior Chris McElvain got the start on Opening Day and threw four shutout innings while striking out 10, the most punchouts by a Vanderbilt Opening Day starter in at least 15 years. Junior Spencer Jones went 5-for-12 (.419) on the weekend with three doubles. Senior Javier Vaz clubbed his first home run as a Commodore on Sunday as part of a 2-for-3 day. Vaz also scored three of Vanderbilt’s five runs on the day. The Vandy pitching staff totaled 45 strikeouts in the series for an average of 15.0 strikeouts per nine — a mark that ranks fifth in the nation and leads the SEC entering the week. The Commodores return to action with a pair of midweek home games Tuesday and Wednesday against North Alabama and Evansville, respectively. Both games are slated for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch. Vanderbilt then hosts Army for a three-game series beginning Friday at Hawkins Field.
