Coach Balcomb’s Postgame Press Conference
Press Conference with Tuomi, Wirth
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Hannah Tuomi scored a career-high 23 points and led four Vanderbilt players in double figures Friday night in a 98-82 victory over Tennessee State.
Tuomi, a sophomore, also had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Commodores (9-2). Christina Wirth added 22 points, Jessica Mooney had 15 and Merideth Marsh 10.
“TSU was certainly smaller than we are, so we used a lot of high level passes,” Melanie Balcomb, VU head coach, said. “In that way, Christina (Wirth) and Hannah (Tuomi) worked well for us.
“Tina threw some great passes and Hannah was moving well. With Tina in the high post and Hannah in the low post, they just clicked really well.”
Marsh scored eight straight points during a 12-0 first-half run that put Vanderbilt ahead to stay. Wirth, Tuomi and Marsh all reached double figures by halftime, and an 18-2 run over the final 4:27 gave the Commodores a 51-24 lead at the break.
“Our offense has been struggling lately in games, but our points in transition were better tonight,” added Wirth. “That’s what we’ve been working on in practice and I think that showed tonight.”
Kendra Appling made six 3-pointers and had 24 points for Tennessee State (4-8). Tiffany Jackson made 12 of 13 free throws and added 22 points and six rebounds for the Lady Tigers.
