Waite Named to Watch List

Ryker Waite earns spot on Brooks Wallace Award Watch List

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s Ryker Waite has been selected to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced Wednesday.

The award honors the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.

The top 100 shortstops in the country were announced Wednesday, led by several players putting up tremendous offensive numbers. But because the award is reflective of more than just offense, there are numerous players putting up solid defensive numbers as well.

Waite is hitting .359 through 13 games this season with six extra-base hits, 13 RBI and 14 walks. The Arizona native has two homers, a triple and three doubles. He currently ranks third on the team in batting average and second in walks and OBP while starting all 13 games at shortstop.

Waite and the Commodores take on Troy at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hawkins Field.
