DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Vanderbilt sophomore Jacqui Concolino equaled the best round of the day at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, firing a 3-under-par 69, to move within three shots of first place at even-par 144 following the second round at the LPGA International Legends Course (Par 72, 6,351 yards).

Concolino is tied with Stanford’s Lauren Todd for sixth place, three shots behind Purdue’s Christel Boeljon who also posted a 3-under-par 69 on day two to lead all individuals at 3-under 141.

“It was one of my best rounds ever, especially battling the weather,” said Concolino who joined 125 other competitors playing in windy conditions that included gusts over 20 miles per hour. “I didn’t worry about my shot and just tried to get the ball close to the hole. I wanted to put myself in good position.”

Concolino and her Vanderbilt teammates started on the 10th hole. After consecutive bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17, Concolino raised her level of play, birdied the difficult 18th hole then went on to go 3-under on the front nine.

“That birdie on No. 18 really got me going,” Concolino said. “I just kept telling myself I was going to birdie that hole and it just shows what positive thinking can do. I was able to get myself together and finish strong.”

“That’s a sign of a great competitor,” head coach Martha Richards said. “Only a handful of players could have posted a score like today in this weather. It’s a testament to her perseverance and patience.”

Concolino’s play, coupled with a steady performance from senior Kristen Svicarovich helped, Vanderbilt remain among the contenders. The Commodores are tied for eighth place at 29-over 605 after posting a 14-over 302 on Wednesday. Vanderbilt is tied with Pepperdine and Arizona State, 18 shots behind tournament leader Duke (587). The Blue Devils put together a 1-under 287 in the morning session.

Svicarovich rebounded from a slow start to post a 3-over 75 on day two. After an up-and-down back nine, Svicarovich recorded birdies on No. 4 and No. 9 and posted a par score on six other holes on the front side. She enters the third round tied for 31st place at 7-over 151.

“Kristen made a triple bogey on No. 18 but never quit fighting before playing the front side 1-under,” Richards said. “That was a perfect example of waiting and being patient. She was hitting the ball well all day and things came together for her on the front nine.”

Other Vanderbilt results include senior Chris Brady slipping into a tie for 63rd position at 11-over 155. Brady took an 8-over 80 on Wednesday. Junior Liebelei Lawrence also posted an 8-over 80 for the second round and dropped into a tie for 79th place at 13-over 157. Freshman Brooke Goodwin finished the second round tied for 87th place at 14-over 158 following a 6-over 78.

“We haven’t come close to putting together a good team round at this tournament, but we’re still in contention” Richards said. “We’ve got to continue to eliminate big numbers. It’s really going to be about which team can block out the weather, be patient and swing with conviction to its target.”

The third of four rounds begins Thursday at 7 a.m. CT. Vanderbilt tees off with Louisville and Arizona State from the 10th hole at 12:20 CT.
