The No. 6 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team heads to Madison, Wisc., this week to take part in the annual ITA National Team Indoors hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

“This tournament is one of the premier events in collegiate tennis,” said Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald. “It’s pretty much the NCAA tournament in February played on fast indoor courts.

Coach Macdonald’s squad hits the Madison campus on Thursday riding a 12 match regular season winning streak that dates back to the spring of 2004. The Dores will look for number 13 against tournament host and No. 48 Wisconsin.

“Wisconsin is much better than their ranking,” said Macdonald. “They will have a great crowd behind them and the match will be a great challenge for us. It’s hard enough to play them at home, but the task is especially hard at Team Indoors.”

In last year’s showdown at the same event, the Dores triumphed over the Badgers, blanking UW, 7-0.

The 2005 Commodore lineup boasts an array of talent from the seasoned senior duo of Audra Falk and Annie Menees, to the talented youth movement of the Commodores who have posted an overall record of 22-2 in both singles and doubles.

Vanderbilt will face a Wisconsin lineup that returns a pair of talented seniors in Lindsey Martin and No. 53 Katie McGaffigan. Together, the senior tandem combines to form the nation’s 27th ranked doubles team.

The ITA National Team Indoors gets underway on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 9:00 a.m. when eight clubs including the Commodores begin match play.

The winner of the Vanderbilt/Wisconsin battle will take on the victor of the Georgia/Northwestern match on Friday at 3:00 p.m.

The prestigious tournament features 13 teams ranked in the top-20 nationally, including eight squads from the nation’s top-10.

“The intensity of this tournament is amazing,” said Macdonald. “The intensity combined with the energy level could light up the city of Madison.”
