VU Women’s Tennis Tourney Update
9/23/2006 Four Vanderbilt singles competitors have advanced to the third round at the Roberta Alison Classic in Alabama after a day and a half of tournament play.
No. 1 seed No. 17 Amanda Fish defeated Notre Dame’s Christian Thompson (6-7, 7-3, 7-5) in the second round of the Crimson Draw and will face Thompson’s twin sister No. 22 Catrina Thompson in round 3. No. 3 seed No. 24 Taka Bertrand dropped her contest to Catrina Thompson (6-2, 7-5) in Round 2 and will face Christian Thompson in the consolation contest.
Commodore Amanda Taylor defeated Auburn’s Whitney Chappell in round 2 (6-3, 6-1), and will face Auburn University-Montgomery’s Hannah Kuervers, who upset No. 1 seed Brook Buck (Notre Dame) in round 2 of the White Draw.
No. 1 seed Liberty Sveke shutout Birmingham Southern’s Jenna Kafferly (6-0, 6-0) in round 1 and followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alabama’s Nicole Briceno in the Red Draw.
Freshman Catherine Newman is the final Commodore to advance to the third round of the tournament, following her wins over Auburn’s Melissa Koning (6-4, 7-5) and Notre Dame’s Cosmina Ciobanu (6-3, 6-1).
Courtney Ulery, Caroline Ferrell, and Taka Bertrand will compete in consolation contests following their losses in the second rounds.
The Commodores found success in the first round of doubles play, with all three competing teams advancing, including newly paired Taka Bertrand and Catherine Newman.
