NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In its first competition in Nashville this fall, the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team hosts the June Stewart Invitational this weekend at the Currey Tennis Center. The tournament, which features eight teams including the Commodores, begins on Friday morning and runs through Sunday afternoon.

The June Stewart Invitational marks the fourth fall tournament for the Commodores, who are coming off a two-week break since their last competition. Chelsea Preeg advanced to the semifinal round of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Knoxville. So far this fall, the three newcomers on the team, freshmen Alex Leatu, Lauren Mira and transfer Nelly Radeva, have led the Commodores with a combined 20-5 record.

This year, the invitational features five eight-player singles draws, one 16 pair doubles draw and a round-robin doubles draw. The singles draws are named after members of the Vanderbilt athletic department.

The tournament is named after former Vanderbilt Senior Women’s Administrator June Stewart, who worked for the athletic department for 28 years. At the time of retirement, she was regarded as one of the most influential women in the Southeastern Conference.

Doubles play will begin on Friday at 11 a.m., followed by the first round of singles in the afternoon. Action will resume Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9 a.m.
