AUBURN, Ala. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened up its fall 2010 schedule today at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic. The Commodores tallied 11 wins during doubles and singles play on the first day of the tournament.
Juniors Erica Robertson and Chelsea Preeg paired up for two wins in Flight 2 of the doubles competition. The duo knocked off Auburn’s Paulina Schippers and Emily Newton, 8-5, before defeating Taylor Lindsey and Alex Clay of Alabama, 8-6. Also picking up two wins for the Commodores was Rachael Dillion and Megan Gornet who opened up Flight 5 with an 8-1 victory over LSU’s Ariel Morton and Hayley Everette. Rookies Lauren Mira and Alex Leatu teamed up for a win in doubles Flight 3 while sophomore transfer Nelly Radeva and senior Keilly Ulery tallied a win in Flight 4.
In singles action, Robertson cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Marni Venter of Kentucky. After dropping her first set 3-6, Ulery bounced back, winning her next two sets, 6-3, 7-5, to pick up a win over Auburn’s Newton. Leatu fell in her first set, 2-6, but had a solid performance in sets two and three, winning 6-1 in each to tally the victory over Cameron Ellis of Georgia. After facing Everette in doubles play, Gornet defeated her in singles play with a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 win in Flight 5 action.
The tournament resumes play Saturday at 10 a.m.
