MIAMI, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s swim team fell to the University of Miami 180-82 in South Beach to close out the fall season, Saturday. The Commodores were led by Laura Dillon who had a first and second-place finish.
“We had some good races and we had some not so good races,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “It was different swimming outdoors and some of the girls struggled with it. Overall, it was a good experience for us and Laura Dillon did well.”
Dillon closed out her day by taking first place in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:25.0., finishing two seconds ahead of Miami’s Sofia Johansson. The junior from Reston, Va., set the teams’ season-best time in the 200-yard butterfly on her way to a second-place finish in a time of 2:10.92.
“It was a good in-season time for me,” Laura Dillon said of her first-place 200-yard breaststroke finish. “I think I did well and was happy with it, but I know I need to work on my times heading into the second half of the season.”
The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay where the foursome of Chelsea Morey, Sarah Lynch, Jess Eccher and Melissa Roberts finished second in a time of 1:53.21. Rose Cornelson, Chloe Ott, Laura Dillon and Jennifer Molchan took third place in a time of 1:53.94.
Erika Deardorf had a successful day, finishing second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:30.68) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.05). Senior Jennifer Molchan finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:57.09 while Margaux Georgiadis took third in a time of 1:58.35.
Sarah Lynch finished second in 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:09.20 and Chloe Ott finished third, two-tenths of a second behind. Amy Salce and Rose Cornelson took second and third in the 200-yard backstroke in times of 2:09.30 and 2:13.07, respectively.
The outdoor meet took place at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool and closed with the 400-yard freestyle relay where the team of Jennifer Molchan, Betsy Galenti, Amy Salce and Melissa Roberts finished second in a time of 3:42.10.
“I think we did well as a team,” Dillon said. “We raced hard, went in with a good attitude and everybody had a good time.”
The Commodores will return to the pool January 8 to host the University of Kansas before traveling to Huntington, W.Va., to face Marshall on January 29.
