OXFORD, Miss. — Junior Katie Schulz’ first goal of the season came with five minutes left in regulation to force overtime for Vanderbilt in an eventual 2-2 tie against Ole Miss Thursday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.
The Commodores moved to 5-8-3 overall and into eighth place in the Southeastern Conference with a 2-4-2 mark. The top eight teams advance to the conference tournament in two weeks in Orange Beach, Ala.
The Rebels recorded their fifth tie of the year to move to 6-6-5 overall and 3-3-3 in league play.
Chrissy Strini’s fifth goal of the year at the 75:37 mark broke a 1-1 tie and gave Ole Miss a 2-1 lead with a little under 15 minutes left in regulation. She scored via a penalty kick as the Commodores were charged with a hand ball.
Schulz then tied the game at the 85:13 mark, scoring on a blast from 20 yards out pas the keeper in the far upper corner of the net.
VU went on to take a 4-1 shot advantage in the overtime sessions, but OM held a 18-12 lead for the game.
Amy Bayles third goal of the year off an assist from Amanda Verkin at the 12:52 mark gave Ole Miss an early 1-0 lead. Lindsay Ratterman tied the game with her second goal of the year off of an assist from Taylour Claxton at the 39:45 mark as the teams went into the half deadlocked at 1-1.
Five different Commodores had a shot on goal, with Ratterman holding the team lead in total shots with three. Bayles led Ole Miss with three shots on goal and six total shots for the game.
Rachel Bachtel had three saves in 110 minutes for VU, while Ann Shelton recorded the same in net for OM.
Vanderbilt will return home for a two-game stand starting with Mississippi State on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the VU Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs lost to Kentucky 3-1 in Starkville Thursday night.
