NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second straight day and third straight game Vanderbilt shutout the opponent with a 4-0 win over Mississippi State to win the series on Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Field.
Grayson Garvin and Mark Lamm combined on the Commodores’ third shutout of the year and third of the past week. Garvin pitched seven scoreless innings before giving way to Lamm. Garvin scattered two hits, walked two and fanned six in his third win of the year. Lamm allowed one hit and struck out two in his two innings of relief to complete the shutout. Vanderbilt’s pitchers have not allowed a run since last Sunday’s game against Illinois-Chicago in the fifth inning, totaling 31 straight scoreless innings going into tomorrow’s series finale with Mississippi State.
The Vanderbilt offense put two runs on the board in the second inning on Curt Casali’s two-run single. The Dores added two more in the seventh inning. Tony Kemp’s triple scored Connor Harrell and Kemp crossed the plate on Anthony Gomez’s sacrifice fly to center field. Kemp led the Commodores’ 11-hit attack with three hits with Curt Casali and Aaron Westlake each collecting two hits. Gomez stretched his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the third inning. Jarrod Parks had two of the Bulldogs’ three hits on the afternoon.
Vanderbilt and Mississippi State wrap up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Senior Taylor Hill takes his turn in the rotation for VU with the Bulldogs yet to name a starter.
