VU Men Set to Tussle with Tigers

1/27/2005

The Vanderbilt men’s tennis squad aims to keep its perfect record intact as it welcomes the Memphis Tigers to the Currey Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The Dores’ matchup with Memphis is the Commodores fourth consecutive non-conference home match to start the 2005 run.  In previous action, Coach Ken Flach’s club blanked both Belmont and UNC Greensboro, while handing the Mocs of UT Chattanooga a 6-1 lashing.

The Tigers come off a 2004 spring season that saw them chalk up 15 wins and earn a spot in the Conference USA tournament semifinals.

Memphis makes the short trip east clutching a 2005 mark of 1-0 after defeating intra-city rival Rhodes College, 7-0 on Saturday.

The 2005 Memphis lineup features a wealth of veterans, tallying a total of six upperclassmen, including five seniors.

The Dores look to counter the Tigers slew of seniors with a talented pair of their own.

VU seniors Scott Brown and Matt Lockin, both All-SEC selections last year, remain undefeated on the young season, posting a combined record of 6-0 in singles action.  Brown currently holds a No. 17 ranking as given by the ITA, while Lockin boasts a ranking of 113.

The Dores also bring an impressive group of underclassmen to their clash with the Tigers.

The Commodore underclassmen have combined to post an overall record of 20-1 in both singles and doubles competition over their first three matches.

This will be a great early season test for our guys,” said Commodore Head Coach Ken Flach.  “Memphis is a good team.  They will be ready to go to battle with us and we must play our best tennis.”

The Dores showdown with the Tigers is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Currey Tennis Center.
