NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In their first consolation match of National Team Indoors, the No. 9 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 13 Michigan for the squad’s third-straight loss.
The Commodores were defeated in two of their three doubles matches and fell in singles on courts one, two and three. The ‘Dores entered consolation play following a 4-2 loss to No. 12 Texas Tech Friday afternoon.
VU dropped the doubles point for the second day in a row, as the Wolverine’s picked up two tight wins on courts two and three, both by a score of 6-4. At the clinch, Astra Sharma and Emily Smith held a 5-4 advantage over the No. 3 doubles team in the nation, Alex Najarian and Kate Fahey.
Michigan’s success flowed into singles play, as the squad took victories on courts one and two, before Fernanda Contreras could earn the ‘Dores’ lone point of the outing on court six.
No. 27 Minor earned a dominant win over VU’s fourth-ranked Sharma, defeating the redshirt-senior in straight sets on court one, 6-3, 6-0. No. 8 Sydney Campbell suffered her second upset in the tournament, falling to No. 26 Fahey. The senior nearly took the first set in a close tiebreaker, but the Wolverine strung together a few key points in the breaker, 7-6(7), and came out on top in the second set, 6-3.
While Vandy’s Georgina Sellyn, Emma Kurtz and Christina Rosca all fought in third sets, Contreras was fighting in a second set tiebreaker on court six. The San Luis Potosi, Mexico native put the Commodores on the board with her 15th win of the year in a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over Valeria Patiuk.
Michigan picked up their final win for the 4-1 clinch on court three as Sellyn fell to No. 64 Najarian in three hotly contested sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Kurtz and Rosca were in close battles on courts four and five at the conclusion of the competition.
Vanderbilt faces Duke Sunday night at 5:30 p.m. CT.
