STANFORD, Calif. – The Vanderbilt duo of Rachael Dillon and Alex Leatu dropped their first round match in the NCAA Doubles Tournament on Thursday evening at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.
Facing the 15th-ranked duo of Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews of Notre Dame, Dillon and Leatu dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision. In the first set, Frilling and Mathews jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Vanderbilt duo fought back and trailed by just one. After exchanging several advantages, Notre Dame won the game to take a 5-3 lead and then held serve to win the first set.
In the second set, a 4-0 deficit proved to be too much to overcome, as Dillon and Leatu, ranked 36th in the nation, got as close as 5-2 before Frilling and Mathews again held serve for the set and match victory.
Today marked the second time this season that Dillon and Leatu have faced Frilling and Mathews. In the dual match at Notre Dame on Feb. 12, Frilling and Mathews held the No. 1 Commodore pair winless as they picked up an 8-0 victory.
Dillon and Leatu conclude the year with a 19-14 record together, which included a 9-2 mark in tournaments. The duo led the team in victories this year.
