VU Blanks Xavier 9-0 To Complete Sweep

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Brett Jacobson threw seven shutout innings to lead Vanderbilt to a 9-0 win over Xavier Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

The Commodores swept the three game series over the Muskeeters to improve to 14-0 on the year, while XU fell to 1-10.

Jacobson scattered six hits over seven innings of work to move to 3-0. He struck out six and walked only the leadoff batter of the game.

Brett Jacobson threw seven scoreless innings to move his record to 3-0 on the season.

Jonathan White led VU’s 12-hit attack going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

“It was a good bounce back game for Jacobson,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “After last weekend, it was good for him to pitch the way he did with just one walk and that was the leadoff hitter. [Offensively], we had more two-out RBIs today, seven out of the nine I think. Flaherty had a good day, hitting the ball on the head, as did Jonny (White) of course.”

VU took a 1-0 lead in the first when Pedro Alvarez singled and scored on a double into the gap in left-center by Ryan Flaherty. The Commodores made it 2-0 in the second when Dominic de la Osa, who reached on a bunt single, scored on a RBI double by Jonathan White.

Vanderbilt blew the game open with a four-run fifth and a three-run seventh to make it 9-0.

White led off the fifth with a solo homer to right, his first of the year. Pedro Alvarez walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on a RBI single by Ryan Flaherty. Andrew Giobbi then closed out the inning with a two-run homer to centerfield, his first career round-tripper.

De la Osa led off the sixth with a walk and moved to third on a single by Brad French. De la Osa then scored on a throwing error by the XU first baseman in a rundown at home. White followed with a RBI single, stole second, and then scored on a single up the middle by Feinberg to make it 9-0.

Cody Crowell pitched a hitless eighth and Casey Weathers followed with two strikeouts in the ninth to complete the win.

Flaherty and White were the two Commodores with multi-hit games as both had three on the afternoon.

Xavier starter Kyle Cowden (0-1) gave up six runs in five innings in the losing effort.

The Commodores will hit the road for a midweek contest against Western Kentucky on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before hosting Illinois-Chicago in a three game series next weekend at Hawkins Field.
