NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 3 Vanderbilt extended its win streak to 14 games with a 3-1 win over Belmont on Tuesday night at First Horizon Park.
Logan Poteet opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, his second long ball on the season.
The Dores went up 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Calvin Hewett reached on a bunt-single, stole second and touched home on an RBI single by Davis Diaz. Diaz finished the game with a team-high two hits.
Alan Espinal, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, made it 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single that brought home Diaz.
Belmont got on the board in the top of the eighth with a solo homer to cut Vandy’s lead to two, but Brennan Seiber closed the door in the ninth to collect his third save on the season.
Ethan McElvain threw four shutout innings and struck out three while allowing three hits. Sam Hliboki (W, 1-0) tossed a scoreless fifth innings and Alex Kranzler turned in 1.1 shutout innings.
Vanderbilt moves to 19-3 on the season and returns to SEC action this weekend with a three-game series at South Carolina.
