Vandy swimming to take on Tulane

Feb. 3, 2011

The Vanderbilt women’s swim team will host Tulane University, Saturday, February 5, to close out the regular season as well as honor the team’s two seniors. The dual meet will be held at 11 a.m. CT at the Centennial SportsPlex.

Vanderbilt University will conduct a ceremony for senior’s Anna Fargo and Jennifer Molchan as they compete in their final home meet as Commodores. The duo will enter the school record books as being the first student-athletes to complete all four years as swimmers since the program resurrected in 2006.

“We are excited for Senior Day,” fifth-year head coach Jeremy Organ said. “I hope that Jen and Anna enjoy it and do well out there.”

Make sure to check vucommodores.com tomorrow afternoon for video interviews with the seniors and more information on Senior Day.

The Commodores (1-6, 0-2 SEC) are coming off their first victory of the season, a 160.5-136.5 win over Marshall in Huntington, W.Va. Erika Deardorf highlighted the event by setting the school record in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:09.71. The sophomore broke her own record set against Marshall last season by five seconds.

The freshmen have continued to excel in the pool this season with Melissa Roberts earning first-place victories in the 50-yard freestyle (25.01) and the 100 free (54.13) against Marshall. Roberts also helped lead the 200-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish in a time of 1:50.16. Chloe Ott won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:26.90 and finished third in the 50-yard freestyle. The freshmen duo of Michelle Williamson and Margaux Georgiadis took second and third in the 500-yard freestyle.

This marks the second meeting between the Commodores and the Green Wave of Tulane with this being the first time Vanderbilt has played host. Vanderbilt faced off against Tulane last season in New Orleans, falling 183-89 on February 6. Laura Dillon had a strong day, taking first-place in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:20.00, a season-best and team-high at the time. Sarah Lynch also captured a victory, swimming the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:07.94.

Tulane (4-11) has lost its previous seven meets with its last victory coming against Northern Colorado on January 8, in San Diego, Calif.

“The team is healthy again and they have been training well so I look for them to have some successful swims this weekend,” said Organ. “Tulane is a talented team and they really beat us last year so I’m looking for us to make some improvements.”

A full recap and results will be posted Saturday afternoon.
