MADISON, Wisc. – The No. 1 Vanderbilt Commodores began their fourth straight run in the ITA Indoors, sweeping a challenging 14th-ranked Duke squad; 4-0.
“It was a quality win over a superb opponent,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. It was a very close match, I know the scored look lop-sided, but they had four match points in doubles but we came back and got it. They’re a really really great team, so I’m very proud of the team and were looking forward to quarterfinals tomorrow”
Vanderbilt began the round of 16 match taking a challenging doubles point. No. 11 Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton gave VU the advantage with a huge 6-1 win over No. 26 Capra/Hamlin.
But it was Astra Sharma and Ellie Yates who pulled out the doubles point, saving four match points to force a tiebreaker. VU took court two in a commanding 7-6(1) breaker.
Vanderbilt came out with momentum, earning five of six first sets; Sharma, Colton and Yates all pulled out tough 6-4 first set victories for the black and gold.
No. 33 Sharma earned VU its first singles point of the match, defeating No. 29 Kaitlyn McCarthy; 6-4, 6-2.
