NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt baseball won its home opener 3-1 over Air Force on Monday at Hawkins Field.
Pitching and defense was the story for most of the game as Vanderbilt’s staff held the Falcons scoreless over the first eight frames. Freshman Austin Nye got the start in his collegiate debut and allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Connor Fennell, a transfer from Dayton, made his Vanderbilt debut in relief of Nye and threw 2.1 scoreless innings, also with five strikeouts and earned his first win as a Commodore.

Luke Guth entered the game sixth inning and struck out three Falcons over 2.2 scoreless innings. Alex Kranzler closed out the game in the ninth for his first career save.
Vandy’s first run came in the bottom of the fourth on a balk. Colin Barczi doubled Vanderbilt’s lead with his first career triple in the bottom of the seventh that scored Riley Nelson.
The Commodores went in front by three in the eighth when JD Rogers, who entered the game on defense in the top half of the inning, blasted a 406-foot home run that cleared the bleachers in right field, his first deep ball on the season and third extra-base hit.
