COLUMBIA, S.C. – Vanderbilt fell 10-2 at South Carolina in the series finale Sunday at Founders Park.
South Carolina opened the scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the first. The Gamecocks plated two more runs on an error and made it 6-0 with a two-run homer. Only two of the runs were earned.
South Carolina’s lead was extended to eight runs after a solo home run in the bottom of the second and an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Ryan Ginther came on in relief and turned in two scoreless frames for the Commodores and didn’t allow a hit.
Matthew Polk got the Dores in the scoring column with a one-out knock in the top of the seventh. Jayden Davis reached on an error and Troy LaNeve was hit by a pitch to put two on with Polk at the plate. Polk worked a full count before lining a single to left-center field, scoring Davis from second.
Jonathan Vastine extended the inning with a two-out single to left, plating LaNeve to cut South Carolina’s lead to 8-2.
The Gamecocks answered with a solo homer in the home half of the seventh to go up 9-2. Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the eighth pushed the lead back to eight at 10-2.
The Commodores return home to host Valparaiso on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
