WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis doubles team of Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares will play for the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Doubles Championship Monday morning at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
Antal and Casares will face the No. 1 seed Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely from Tennessee, after the Vandy duo defeated No. 2 seed Memphis’ Alyssa Hibberd and Tiffany Welcher in the semifinals, 8-6, Sunday morning.
Tennessee’s Boren and Szekely will also represent Tennessee in the singles championship, so no matter what the singles champion will come from the University of Tennessee.
Three Commodores were still in action in the singles tournament on Sunday during the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
Lauren Mira’s run came to an end Sunday afternoon in the semifinals to the No. 1 seed, Brynn Boren of Tennessee. Mira and Boren played a terrific three-set match before Boren edged out the win 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. Mira advanced to the semifinals after beating Memphis’ Tiffany Welcher in two sets 6-2, 6-2.
Marie Casares was upset in the quarterfinals by Louisville’s Julia Fellerhoff 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The sophomore will still have a shot at a championship in doubles with teammate Ashleigh Antal.
Freshman Courtney Colton saw her excellent tournament come to an end Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals. Colton was defeated in three sets by the No. 2 seed Kata Szekely from Tennessee 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Through her first two collegiate tournaments, Colton is now 6-1 in singles play.
Following the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, Vanderbilt will be back in action Nov. 2-4, at the Memphis Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
