COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 6 Vanderbilt dropped the series finale at No. 3 Texas A&M, 12-6, Sunday afternoon at Blue Bell Park.
The Commodores held an early lead but the Aggies used a six-run fifth inning to pull ahead.
Braden Holcomb put the Dores on the board with a two-run home run to left field in the top of the second. The inning continued as Calvin Hewett reached base on a fielder’s choice after a single by Jack Bulger. Hewett stole second and took third on a throwing error. With two outs, Jonathan Vastine brought home Hewett with a flared single over the shortstop’s head into to give Vandy a 3-0 lead.
RJ Austin then drove a ball off the wall in center field and Vastine came all the way around from first to score on Austin’s first career triple. The Dores finished the top of the second inning with four runs on four hits.
The Aggies trimmed the Vandy lead down to 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Texas A&M took advantage of an error in the bottom of the fifth, taking an 8-4 lead with a six-run frame. The Aggies then added a run on a wild pitch in the sixth to go in front by five.
Davis Diaz continued his strong weekend with a solo homer in the top of the eighth to cut Texas A&M’s lead to 9-5, but the Aggies answered with three runs in the home half of the inning.
Another solo homer in the top of the ninth, this one by Matthew Polk, gave Vandy six runs on the day. Texas A&M would hang on to win 12-6.
The Commodores return to Nashville and will play Tuesday at Lipscomb. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
