Vandy Boys back in action in summer leagues

July 7, 2015

Weeks after wrapping up Vanderbilt’s record third consecutive 50-win season, the Commodores are returning to action in collegiate summer leagues with 21 Dores suiting up in the Cape Cod League, Northeast Collegiate Baseball League, Northwoods League, Valley League and Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League.

The Cape Cod League – summer baseball’s premier league – has eight Vandy Boys in action. First place Orleans will get a boost when Dores Bryan Reynolds and John Kilichowski arrive. The rising juniors will get their first taste of the Cape after Reynolds played for Team USA last summer and Kilichowski starred in the NECBL. Yarmouth-Dennis also has a pair of Commodores with local boy Will Toffey and fellow Massachusetts native Ben Bowden, who made a brief appearance in the NECBL last summer. Both VU catchers are in the Cape with Jason Delay on the Bourne roster and Karl Ellison in Brewster along with Jordan Sheffield. Sheffield put together a solid summer in the NECBL last year along with Ellison. Delay makes his return to Bourne after playing in 10 games for the Braves last summer. Jeren Kendall will join Cotuit in his first summer league action.

The NECBL has five Commodores on the field with Brendan Spagnuolo and Liam Sabino suiting up for the Newport Gulls with Matt Ruppenthal set to join the roster as well. Spagnuolo has been excellent in a team-best 11 games, the right-hander has struck out 21 over 20 innings with six saves. Sanford has two Dores in action with Joey Abraham recently joined by Nolan Rogers. Abraham has been solid in a team-high five starts with a 2.25 ERA.

The Northwoods League is the summer home to five mores Commodores with Tyler Green, Ryan Johnson and Penn Murfee all dressing out for the Thunder Bay Border Cats. Drake Parker has played in 34 games for the Lakeshore Chinooks. Ro Coleman joined the Madison Mallards last week, delivering a walk-off winner in his first week with the team.

Two Commodores are in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League for the summer in Collin Snider and Tristan Chari. Snider joined the Shelter Island Bucks last week with Chari taking a roster spot with the Sag Harbor Whalers earlier in the summer. Chari leads the Whalers with a .366 average in 25 games.

Aubrey McCarty will be the lone Commodores playing the Valley League for the Waynesboro Generals when he reports.
