Vanderbilt undefeated in singles championships at FFC

The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team concluded it’s final day at the Furman Fall Classic Sunday afternoon, and headed back home with hardware.

“I’m really proud of the way we competed yesterday”, said associate head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “I thought we got a little better each day and finished strong in our last matches. Sydney (Campbell), Astra (Sharma), Ashleigh (Antal), and Ellie (Yates) all fought hard to capture their respective singles flights.”

With five singles flight championships on the line, the Commodores battled though adversity to seized them all.

In Flight two play, sophomore Sydney Campbell earned her second championship at the FFC following last year’s defeat over then No. 46 Daneika Borthwick of Florida State. Campbell finished the weekend strong defeating Clemson’s Joana Eidukonyte, 6-4, 6-2.

Vandy’s No. 82 Marie Casares and No. 63 Courtney Colton squared off against one another for the Flight three championship, with Colton coming out on top, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

“Marie (Casares) and Courtney (Colton) found themselves playing each other in the finals of their flight and the quality of their match was awesome. That’s a difficult thing to do, playing a teammate in college and they both handled it really well, extremely pleased with the level of play.”

In Flight four championships, Astra Sharma faced off against interstate rival Tennessee, defeating Laurence Guevremon in a close 6-2, 7-6(5) tiebreak.

Ashleigh Antal breezed through her Flight Five bracket not dropping a set the entire weekend. Antal’s championship match was no different, defeating South Carolina’s Ximena Siles Luna in a 6-0, 6-1, victory.

After a hard fought road to the championships, Ellie Yates won her Flight six championship match 6-4, 6-1, against SEC divisional opponent Alex Morgan of South Carolina.

Four Commodores, Casares, Altick, Colton, and Campbell head to Pacific Palisades, Calif. to compete in the 31st Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. The tournament is a chance for the nation’s top singles and doubles players to compete in a week of competitive collegiate tennis.
