Game Notes-In 112 years of Vanderbilt basketball, Sunday’s game marked the first meeting between the Commodores and the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans. With the 83-56 win, Vanderbilt improves to 1-0 over Trevecca Nazarene.-Vanderbilt is now 81-32 in season-openers, including 56-7 at Memorial Gym and 15-1 under Coach Stallings. The `Dores have won eight-straight senior openers.- The group of Shelton Mitchell, Luke Kornet, Jeff Roberson, Riley LaChance, and Damian Jones started for the Commodores in the season opener. It marked the first time since March 12, 2009, that Vanderbilt has started three true freshmen.- Head coach Kevin Stallings tied Rick Stansbury of Mississippi State for all-time wins in the SEC with 293.- Vandy’s season-opening attendance was 7,581 Team Notes– Vanderbilt shot 60 percent (21-35) from behind the line.- The Commodores came in at 50 percent from the floor, going 28-56.- From outside the arch, Vandy shot 27 percent (6-22)- While the Commodores came up with the win, they led the Trojans in turnovers, accumulating 16 to Trevecca’s 12.- Trevecca led the Commodores in steals, 12-2.
– Vanderbilt outrebounded the Trojans, 53-29. Player Notes– Sophomore Damian Jones recorded a career high 24 points and his sixth career double-double with 12 rebounds.- Luke Kornet set a career-high in rebounds and blocks, recording 10 boards and four blocks.- Kornet, a sophomore, also recorded his first career double-double, accumulating 10 points an 10 rebounds.- In his Commodore debut Riley LaChance recorded 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists for the ‘Dores.- Shelton Mitchell, a debuting freshman, secured six points and three boards for the Commodores.- Jeff Roberson led the freshman in rebounding with 6 rebounds and 1 block. Roberson also accumulated 8 points for VU.- In his first career game for the Commodores, Freshman Mathew Fisher-Davis gathered five points and two rebounds.- Wade Baldwin IV went 4-5 from the floor, securing nine total points and three boards.
