NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt collected yet another run-rule victory Tuesday, the team’s sixth over the first nine games of the season.
The Commodores used two grand slams to knock off Evansville 15-3 in seven innings at Hawkins Field. Vandy has hit four grand slams this season, already surpassing last season’s total.
Braden Holcomb, reigning SEC Player of the Week, drove in six runs with a grand slam and a two-run homer. Mike Mancini recorded Vandy’s other grand slam, an opposite-field blast in the bottom of the second that broke the game open.
Holcomb already has six homers this season and leads the team in RBI with 21.
Vandy pushed six runs across in the bottom of the second, including Mancini’s four-run swing. Evansville answered with two runs in the third but the Dores got them right back on a double by Korbin Reynolds in the home half that brought two runs home.
Holcomb’s two-run shot in the fourth made it 10-2 and his grand slam in the sixth was part of a five-run frame to push Vandy’s lead into run-rule territory.
The Aces scored in the top of the seventh but Luke Guth struck out the final two batters as Vandy won 15-3.
Vanderbilt will carry a six-game win streak into the Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Classic this weekend, taking on UC Irvine, Arizona and Oregon.
During the win streak, the Commodores have hit 16 home runs and outscored their opponents 80-14.
All three games this weekend will stream on D1Baseball.com with a subscription. For radio, the first two games will air in Nashville on 94.9 The Fan with Sunday’s contest vs. Oregon airing on 102.5 The Game.
