NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt pounded out 17 hits en route to a 10-1 win Saturday over Tennessee at Hawkins Field to clinch the team’s 10th series victory of the season.
The Commodores struck first scoring in the bottom of the first on Jason Esposito’s RBI-double but the Volunteers picked up a solo home run from Ethan Bennett in the second to tie the game. Aaron Westlake’s solo home run in the third put the Dores back out in front to stay with VU scoring eight runs over the next five innings to put the game away.
Westlake enjoyed a big day for Vanderbilt going 4-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs. His two home run day is the second by a Commodore this season joining Esposito, who turned the trick at South Carolina. Esposito added three hits in the win to extend his hitting streak to 23 games and moved into a tie for sixth all-time with his 53rd double of his career in the first inning. Westlake moved into eighth place all-time with three runs in the game to bring his career total to 162. Tony Kemp and Riley Reynolds each had two hits for VU with Kemp and Sam Lind each driving in two runs. Bennett and Drew Steckenrider had two hits apiece to pace the Vols.
Grayson Garvin picked up his ninth win of the year working 5.2 innings. The southpaw fanned six and allowed one run on six hits to improve to a perfect 7-0 in seven SEC starts. UT starter Jon Reed was pegged with the loss allowing four runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings.
The Commodores bring the brooms tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Senior Taylor Hill takes the ball for the Dores and will oppose Tennessee’s Nick Blount.
