A national championship in women’s tennis, runner-up finish in baseball and fifth-place finish in men’s golf highlighted a year of many outstanding individual and team performances for Vanderbilt. The three top-five finishes were the second most in school history, just one behind the 2003-04 academic year.

With the 2014-15 college athletics calendar coming to an end, the full scope of Vanderbilt’s on-the-field achievements have come into focus with the release of the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings.

300directors062615.jpgThe Commodores finished the year ahead of 83 percent of Division I programs, totaling 494.25 points to rank 51st of 293 NCAA Division I programs. It should be noted that the Directors’ Cup totals scores for up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s – for each institution, and that Vanderbilt sponsors just 16 sports.

The point total is the fourth-most in school history, and continued Vanderbilt’s recent success of finishing among the top 51 schools for four straight years – a feat that had never previously been accomplished at Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt made a hard charge up the standings with another strong spring, as six teams totaled 388.25 points. The Commodores earned a full 100 points from the women’s tennis team winning the national championship. The 388.25 points scored in the spring ranked 15th among all schools.

The Commodores received the following point totals from its teams:
Women’s Tennis – 100
Baseball – 90
Men’s Golf – 72.75
Men’s Tennis – 50
Women’s Cross Country – 46
Women’s Golf – 39.5
Women’s Outdoor Track – 36
Women’s Indoor Track – 35
Bowling – 25

Stanford won the Directors’ Cup and UCLA placed second.

Vanderbilt also finished favorable in the the Capital One Cup, which utilizes a different scoring format from the Directors’ Cup. Introduced in 2011, the cup keeps separate standings for men’s and women’s sports. Vanderbilt’s men’s programs finished 16th and the women’s programs ranked 30th.
