Vanderbilt Finishes Sixth in Phill Hansel Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas

The Vanderbilt swim team finished the Phill Hansel invitational in 6th place Saturday evening, scoring 603 points during the three day invitational in Houston, Texas.

The Commodores earned four top-three finishes on Saturday, placing in the top three in 20 different races throughout the three days. Senior Breanna Sapienza won the “C” final of the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.98 seconds. Paige Hamilton finished fourth in the same final, and Johanna Goldblatt, Madeline Hunt, Summer Brown, and Reagan Roob also qualified for the finals of the 100-yard freestyle.

The best event for the Dores on Saturday was the 200-yard backstroke. Lauren Bergmann took third place in the “B” final, and Kate Hornaday and Mary Beckwith placed second and third in the “D” final of the same event, respectively. Madison Eaker also finished sixth in the “B” final of the event.

Vanderbilt seemed to enjoy the 200-yard events on the third day of the invitational, posting good swims in multiple events of that length. Both Hannah Hunt and Lindsey Gordon finished in seventh place in the “A” and “B” finals of the 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Brooke Ellis took fifth place and Lara Hernandez-Tome finished in sixth place in the “B” final of the 200-yard butterfly.

Vanderbilt’s one relay on the day swam well, finishing the 400-yard freestyle relay fifth in 3:25:64. Hernandez-Tome also finished sixth in the long 1650-yard freestyle, and Selah Peacock took 12th in the same event.

Vanderbilt now returns home for their next home meet on November 29 against Marshall at the Centennial Sportsplex at 6 p.m. The November 29 meet is the last home meet for the program’s four seniors, Madeline Hunt, Brenda Cha, Brown, and Sapienza.
