Commodores Score Six Runs in the Sixth Inning

Murfreesboro, Tenn. — The Commodores used a six-run sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Middlee Tennessee Tuesday night, 9-3, at Reese Smith Field.  The win improves Vanderbilt to 28-12, while MTSU is now 19-18.  Freshman left-hander Cody Crowell went 2.0 innings in relief to earn his second win on the season.  Chase Swing went 5.1 innings allowing two runs on seven hits and picked up the loss (1-1) for the Blue Raiders.

The win gave the Vanderbilt staff their 100th career win with Corbin at the helm.  Corbin is only the fourth head baseball coach in VU history — out of 21 — to win 100 career games and is the fastest to achieve the milestone.  Corbin did it in his third season with the Commodores.

Middle Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Nathan Hines scored on a wild pitch by Vanderbilt starter Ryan Rote.  Hines singled up the middle and moved to second on Rote’s first wild pitch.  Jeff Beachum hit a single that deflected off Rote to second moving Hines to third.  Rote struck out the final two batters to end the inning stranding the two baserunners.

The Commodores scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead.  Dominic de la Osa hit a two-run homerun over the left centerfield wall – that hit on top of the football stadium restrooms — scoring Warner Jones who led off the inning with a single up the middle on the first pitch giving Vanderbilt a 2-1 lead.  Kyler Weatherington replaced Swing on the mound for the Blue Raiders and walked Alex Feinberg and Antoan Richardson.  Matt Zeller hit a single to right field scoring Feinberg to extend the lead to two, 3-1. Rucker Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases and Josh Anderson replaced Weatherington on the mound to face Stephen Shao with one away.  Shao took a full count and hit a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Richardson and Zeller.  Mike Baxter hit a shot to third base forcing Taylor out, but the throw by Nate Jaggers to first was off the mark allowing Shao to score from first and moving Baxter to third.  Allan Woodward replaced Anderson who retired the side.

MTSU scored one run in the sixth inning.  Jeff Sues gave up three consecutive singles by Nate Jaggers, Michael McKenry and Nathan Hines with two away. Jaggers scored on a single to left field by Hines and McKenry was thrown out at third by Shao.

VU added one in the eighth inning when Brian Hernandez hit a double down the left field line scoring Shao who reached on a walk.

Alex Feinberg was hit by a pitch (Wallus) to leadoff the ninth inning.  Garza pinch hit for Richardson and hit a single up the middle moving Feinberg to third base.  Bill Kleinschrodt hit a double that dusted the third base line scoring Feinberg and moving Garza to third.  David Macius pinch hit for Shao and hit a ground out deep to second scoring Garza for a 9-2 VU lead.
