NASHVILLE — The Vanderbilt Commodores recorded their second consecutive shutout with a 7-0 victory over Lipscomb University tonight at Hawkins Field. Vanderbilt defeated Southern Illinois 15-0 Sunday to sweep the three-game series with the Salukis.

The last time Vanderbilt recorded back-to-back shutouts was March 14, 1994, when VU defeated Morehead State 9-0 after having beaten St. Joseph’s 12-0 three days earlier.

The Commodores are now 4-0, while Lipscomb owns a 1-1 overall record.

Matt Buschmann (6-3, 175, Soph., RHP,  Wildwood, Mo.) gave up three hits in five innings with six strikeouts and earned the win.  Michael Wagner (6-1, 176, RHP, Fr., Woodinville, Wash.) pitched three innings and gave up three hits with one strikeout, and Ryan Rote (6-3, 216, RHP, Jr., Delafield, Wis.) closed out the ninth with one hit and one strikeout.

Chandler Ganick recorded his first loss of the season for the Bisons. He allowed three runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

Antoan Richardson (5-8, 165, Jr., CF, Nassau, Bahamas), increased his league-leading stolen base total by three.  He entered the game with four and stole second, third and home once each.

“Coach (Tim Corbin) noticed it (the opportunity to steal home),” Richardson said.

“I gave (the batter) the take and told Antoan to go as fast as he could,” Corbin, the Vanderbilt head coach added.

The Commodores have 20 stolen bases in 21 attempts in the first four games led by Richardson’s seven.

After two scoreless innings, the Commodores got on the board in the third when Ryan Klosterman (5-11, 175, Jr., SS, Clermont, Fla.) scored on a RBI by Mike Baxter (6-0, 183, So., 1B, White Stone, NY).  Baxter, playing first base for the first time, went 4-5.

The Commodores added two more runs in the fifth inning.  Richardson tripled down the first base line and scored on a wild pitch by Ganick.  Warner Jones (5-10, 160, So., 2B, Nashville, Tenn.) singled to left, advanced to second on another wild pitch and then scored on Tony Mansolino’s (6-0, 200, Jr., 3B, Clovis, Calif.) single to left field.

Vanderbilt added one in the sixth and seventh innings and two in the eighth.

Matt McGraner (6-2, 205, So., C, Germantown, Tenn.) scored on a Klosterman sacrifice fly in the sixth and Baxter scored on an Aaron Garza (6-0, 179, Fr., LF, Austin, Texas) single to left field in the seventh.

In the eighth inning, Klosterman singled and advanced to second when Richardson was hit with a pitch.  Cesar Nicolas (6-4, 233, Sr., DH, Miami, Fla.) flied out to right field scoring Klosterman and then Richardson scored when he stole home.
