Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt opened the 2015 campaign by taking the series against Santa Clara… The Commodores shut out the Broncos on opening day with a 4-0 win led by pitchers Carson Fulmer and Philip Pfeifer… Fulmer earned the win with five scoreless and seven strikeouts while Pfeifer picked up his first career save with four scoreless innings of his own in his first appearance since 2013… The Dores matched a Hawkins Field record with three triples in the win led by Tyler Campbell’s two hits and Ro Coleman’s two RBI… The Broncos rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to literally steal the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday 7-6… The winning run crossed the plate when Jose Vizcaino Jr. stole home on a botched suicide squeeze play… The loss overshadowed Dansby Swanson matching a career-best with four hits, including two doubles and two RBI… The Commodores bounced back to win the nightcap and the series 6-5 in 10 innings thanks to Ro Coleman, who delivered the walk-off winner when Santa Clara’s second baseman could not field the ball cleanly as part of a drawn-in infield… Jordan Sheffield made his collegiate debut and picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to cap off a solid performance from the bullpen… Sheffield combined with Ben Bowden and freshman Joey Abraham to allow two runs, one earned, on five hits over eight innings of work… Vanderbilt is slated to return to action on Wednesday against crosstown rival Belmont at Rose Park at 4 p.m. before welcoming Illinois-Chicago to Hawkins Field for a three-game weekend series starting Friday.
