Vanderbilt Baseball Has 13 Players Taken in 2005 MLB Draft

Eight Commodores on the 2005 Roster Along with Five Signees Drafted

The Vanderbilt Commodore baseball team saw eight players on the 2005 roster and five signees taken in the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft which concluded Wednesday evening (June 8).  A school record eight players, including two signees, were drafted on the first day with five more players taken on the second day (including three signees).  

Junior right-hander Jensen Lewis was the top Commodore pick taken in the third round (#102) by the Cleveland Indians.  Junior left-hander Ryan Mullins was taken three picks later by Minnesota (3rd round, #105).  Junior first baseman Mike Baxter was chosen in the fourth round (#128) by San Diego.  Senior right-hander Jeff Sues and senior right-hander Ryan Rote were both taken in the fifth round.  Pittsburgh drafted Sues (#151) and the Chicago White Sox took Rote three choices later (#154).  Commodore signee Brett Jacobson, a right-handed pitcher from Carefree, Ariz., was taken in the 11th round (#321) by Arizona, while signee Pedro Alvarez, an infielder from New York, NY, was the #438 pick (14th round) by Boston.  Junior second baseman Warner Jones was taken in the 17th round (#510) by Detroit.

Five Commodores were taken on Day Two.  Senior third baseman Tony Mansolino was drafted by Pittsburgh in the 26th round (#781).  Senior centerfielder Antoan Richardson was the #1062 pick (35th round) by San Francisco.  Three signees were the final three selections for the Commodores.  Bobby Kennedy, a left-handed pitcher from Ocala, Fla., was drafted by Philadelphia (39th round, #1177); Kurt Lipton, an outfielder from Boca Raton, Fla., was taken in the 40th round (#1210) by San Francisco; and Diallo Fon, an outfielder from Suison City, Calif., was drafted by the New York Yankees (49th round, #1474).

Last season, a total of seven players were taken in the 2004 draft (five on the first day) with left-handed pitcher Jeremy Sowers being the highest pick ever for Vanderbilt at #6 (Cleveland Indians).
